2009-12-30 Introduction of Hortiq label guarantees quality through independent testing

The introduction of the Hortiq quality label has further enhanced the position of Dutch greenhouse builders on the world market. The Hortiq quality certificate is based on an independent, objective quality system for greenhouse construction companies, fitters and other suppliers to the horticultural industry. It is an initiative of AVAG, the leading trade association of companies working for the horticultural industry in the Netherlands, but non AVAG members can also apply for Hortiq certification. AVAG introduced the quality label to meet the growing demands of market gardeners and growers.

The new certificate covers both product quality and process management. This means that companies that want to apply for Hortiq registration  must be able to demonstrate not only that their products meet the relevant technical requirements but also that their organisation and quality management policy are up to scratch.

Many organisations in the horticultural sector currently work in accordance with ISO 9000 quality management guidelines, but this standard was not specifically designed with horticulture in mind. The Hortiq quality label, on the other hand, was developed on the basis of input from all stakeholders in the market-gardening business, and is thus specially tailored to meet their needs. It may thus be said to add value to the products and companies that come up to its standards. A significant proportion of the roughly 75 greenhouse builders and other horticultural suppliers in the Netherlands have already expressed interest in Hortiq certification.

Kiwa, the Dutch quality assurance institute with a worldwide reputation, developed the new quality label and will also take care of the certification procedure on behalf of AVAG. The trade association stated that it was pleased with this association with Kiwa, which carries with it the benefit of Kiwa’s long experience in the field of quality certification. The first Hortiq certificates will be presented during the 2009 Horti Fair in Amsterdam in October.

The Hortiq quality label is not compulsory, but many clients such as market gardeners and growers will demand it in view of the huge sums they have to invest in new greenhouses. It goes without saying, then, that they want these greenhouses and the associated equipment to come up to the very highest standards.
